GOD IS A NAME CHANGER

Have you ever noticed that the closer you are to someone, the less you use they use your given name? Nicknames, it seems, are  great indicator of a relationship status. Have you ever wondered  if God has a nickname for you? What does he call you when He talks in heaven about you? God is in the business of changing people’s names to indicate their close standing with Him.

God knows who YOU are!

He knows the real you and sees you. Even if your past has tarnished you name, God can change it He can take away all those stains and give you a name that lines up with how He knows  you. God loves to rename people! From Loser to Winner (Romans 8:37) from Ugly to Beautiful (Psalm 139:19a), and from Lost to Found (Luke 15:11-32).

The Lord can change that secret name we give ourselves and give us a name that brings Him glory.

Read and underline the verses on below in your Bible. Write any verses that jump out at you on some paper or a journal, so you don’t forget them.

LOOK DEEPER

Genesis 32:24-30 (CSB)

24 So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”27 The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered.28 Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” 29 Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.” But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there.30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”

Exodus 33:17 (CSB)

17The Lord answered Moses, “I will do this very thing you have asked, for you have found favor with me, and I know you by name.”

John 10:14 (NIV)

14 “I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and my own know me...”

PERSONAL REFLECTION

  • Are there any “names”  they call you or you secretly call yourself that you wish God to change?

  • How does it make you feel knowing that no matter what label you have, God can use it in amazing ways?

  • Do you think God has a nickname for you? What would it be?

  • Take a few minutes to  thank God for the fact that He has the power to rename and to do amazing things through you.
